Strong shear and instability will create conditions favorable for tornadoes from northeast TX into the mid-MS valley today; the threat will shift east just a bit into tomorrow and Wednesday, as this multi-day severe weather outbreak continues — those in the risk area are urged to plan for significant severe weather! Significant flooding will also be an issue for portions of northern AR, southern MO and points east, as 8+ inches of rain is expected to have fallen by the time this system has moved out of the area. Major flooding combined with the severe threat makes this a rather complicated next few days of weather for residents of the central U.S. As always, a number of chasers will be streaming this event from the live page.

Severe Storms NE NSW : 2 April 2011

An upper trough kicked off a few severe storms over NE NSW on Saturday 2 April 2011. One storm developed west of Kempsey about 1pm then tracked north passing between Casino and Lismore at 7.30pm and continued into SE Queensland into late evening. I wasn't able to chase but got these shots beside the Richmond River in Ballina. The sunset with the trawlers heading out to sea was nice too.

There was one amazing bolt that reminded me of this one from a few years ago, then just in-cloud lightning and some weak anvil crawler stuff – which was a shame.

Other storms developed along the coast in the S-SE change. These were taken of the cloud tops from home around 11pm.

Police forensic services have been kept busy most of the night with a spate of robberies in the inner city & eastern suburbs.
The first incident occurred at 10.00pm where two people were robbed in Cleveland St, Surry Hills.
Four males described as being Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islanders robbed the two persons and a male gave chase. A scuffle ensued and the male was stabbed in the lower back.

Re: NSW / SEQ Thunderstorms 27 Feb – 3 Mar 2011

Wow!!! Spectacular shots Kane, refreshing to see some decent structure!

Here's a few pics from a chase with Michael Bath to Casino and eventually Grafton

Lots of CC lightning made shooting difficult but the bolts were nice to see, even though they were somewhat distant. Was nice to get out on a chase again even if the storms didn't co-operate fully. Thanks to MB for driving and shouting me tea…..chase fail for me forgetting my wallet!!

Cheers Jason

NE NSW/SE QLD Thunderstorms 20 – 22 February 2011

Few storms around today a SWW for severe thunderstorms was issued for a period earlier this afternoon.
Managed a quick chase to Kilcoy this afternoon.
Couple of pics looking south at the west side of the two cells that poped up infront of the main line just before 3pm
Pics 3.09 to 3-27pm

and an approaching guster back at the coast hinterland later around 4.30pm

Re: VIC/NSW Rain, Floods and Storms 29 Oct – 2 Nov 2010

Yesterday I had a successful but at times frustrating chase to Gloucester.

I checked the models at Taree library this morning (9:30am) and made the decision to head westwards. I found a good view 10kms west of Taree and sat there for 20minutes or so. I moved further westwards as I had the feeling the ranges would see the majority of action. Almost at Gloucester I got a phonecall from Lightning Chaser, he mentioned about the impressive storm over Dungog which was 50kms to my south. Unfortunately it was one of those days where you can't even make out a storm thats reasonably closeby. There was simply too much low cloud. I was dissapointed about missing out, but the air felt primed for more storms. I found a respectable vantage point 10kms east of Gloucester and waited.

A storm came into view behind the hills, and a solid RFB began to show itself (below)

Unfortunately for me this base decided to stay put ,over no mans land( about 20kms to my north). Desparate to get closer I hunted around for roads that would take me closer to the storm. Unable to find a road I had to settle with distant glimpses of the structure including some lovely inflow features (see below) At this stage the anvil thunder was almost constant, but no CGs to be seen. Warm inflow was on my back, gusting up to 30km/h.

For a good hour or so the storm refused to move any closer and this became extremely frustrating. At times the structure had supercell appearances to it,but quite often the most interesting part of the storm was blocked behind hills.

Eventually the storm moved into a useful range for me. Just after I took the photo below, some lovely CGs battered the country side just 3kms to my west. The booms were very loud and echoed off the surrounding mountains. A couple of CGs struck beside me about 1.5-2kms away, but there was no way I was getting in the car. Unfortunately the rain forced me into the car.CGs were still coming down reasonably close by, but the storm was outflow dominated and rapidly weakening, to such an extent that I only got moderate rainfall and 50km/h winds. I'm conviced large hail would've fallen at the storms peak.

Heres a 2 minute clip from yesterdays action.

Severe storm- Gloucester- November 1 2010

So how long are storm chases?

Once at the target and all data is analysed, the wait for storm development could be brief or nervously long. I constantly analyse what is going on – cumulus cloud development, winds, and how healthy the clouds look in specific areas that may give a clue as to where the main action will develop. If only one storm develops, the decision is easy – chase that one if it is worth while chasing (road network to get to the storm, viability in terms of fuel costs, quality of the storm). If there are several storms, I have to try choosing the best storm out of those based on experience. Even then when on the chase, I continually re-assess the situation as one of the newer developing storms may have intensified and this could mean moving to that storm. In all of this confusion, you have to work with the available network quickly and accurately, ensure you are safe and you are working with the road rules. Sometimes, the chase has to be called off given the road network and environment may make it unsafe. In all, storm chases can last from as little as half an hour to several hours. Most of this time is taken up in driving to and from the event. Some of the best storm chases have been both exhausting yet rewarding. One has to make the most of their opportunities.
