Devastating tornado in Joplin, Missouri

Destructive Joplin Missouri Tornado

Above is video of yesterday's horrific tornado in Joplin, Missouri, filmed by the TVN Basehunters storm chasing team of Scott Peake, Colt Forney, Kevin Rolfs and Isaac Pato. The four meteorology students assisted with first response efforts as they arrived in Joplin, even transporting injured victims to the hospital. Please refer to the National Weather Service in Springfield, MO for the latest information on the Joplin tornado (here).

Severe weather also threatens a wide area of the eastern and central U.S. today, the latest in what has been a multi-day severe weather episode. Tomorrow, May 24, 2011, has all the makings of an extremely dangerous weather day across the southern Plains. Parmeters are highly indicative of long-tracked, strong to violent tornadoes across Kansas and Oklahoma. As such, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Day-2 Moderate Risk, and an upgrade to High Risk appears likely. Residents of the risk areas are strongly urged to monitor this developing situation and have a good severe weather plan in place now. Dozens of storm chasers will be covering this event to provide ground-truth to NWS and media personnel; live streaming video is available at our Live page, here.

Tornadoes Severe weather outbreak possible tomorrow in OK and KS!

Severe weather outbreak possible tomorrow in OK and KS!

Severe weather is in the forecast for today, from parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin southeast all the way to the Carolina coast. Large hail, damaging winds and a marginal tornado threat will exist over this area into the evening. The main story is the potent mid-level storm system that will eject into the southern Plains Wednesday, resulting in what should be the first significant severe weather event since the modern-day Super Outbreak which portions of the southern U.S. experienced during late April. A robust field of low-level moisture should be in place across most of Oklahoma and Kansas by mid-afternoon tomorrow as a surface low currently parked over the extreme western OK panhandle deepens and drifts northeast into northwest Kansas into the evening. As this surface low migrates northward, a sharp dryline will take shape from northwest Kansas into west-central Oklahoma and points south by evening. Ample daytime heating and dewpoints in the 70s will allow for strong instability to build throughout the day ahead of the dryline. Cooler temperatures aloft along with the arrival of an upper-level jet max will promote initiation along the dryline by mid/late-afternoon. Wind shear profiles suggest that initial convection should be supercellular, and by early evening, low-level wind shear should be most conducive for tornadoes, with the two areas of particular interest residing along the central OK/Kansas border, as well as along the triple point, which should materialize in northwest Kansas. As such, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Day-2 moderate risk for severe weather across most of the southern and central Plains states. Storm chasers will likely be out in force and streaming on the Live page. As always, residents of the threatened areas are encouraged to monitor local conditions and statements from NWS and media outlets.

RE: Tornadoes outbreak 14 – 15 April 2011 : Insane footage Oklahoma, Mississippi

INSANE video from Oklahoma.. . Another Tornado Outbreak Today

Massive multi-vortex wedge from southern Oklahoma – April 14, 2011

At least 10 tornadoes were reported yesterday across Kansas and Oklahoma, including one particularly strong wedge tornado from a supercell that moved through Atoka County in extreme southern Oklahoma just north of the Red River. Sadly, at least two fatalities resulted from this violent tornado from the communities of Atoka and Tushka, OK, which sustained the worst damage. Several storm chasers were some of the first on the scene of the damage, and helped out substantially with the recovery effort. Here is video of that tornado from Gabe Garfield and Marc Austin:

On the flip-side, we were chasing a supercell further north in Central Oklahoma, where the deeper moisture did not materialize, and witnessed thiis much weaker and harmless rope tornado just northeast of Chandler, OK.

Today in the Lower Mississippi River Valley, I would not be surprised to see 5 times the number of yesterday's tornadoes, especially across central and southern MS into AL where the strongest low-level wind shear and instability will coincide. Forecast hodographs look extremely favorable for strong tornadoes ahead of the advancing front, with over 30 knots of 0-1 km wind shear creating insane helicity values. The SPC currently has a moderate risk out for the aforementioned area, but an upgrade to high risk in the next outlook would not be out of the question, especially given the recent RUC model forecasts. TVN is just now completing the all-night drive from Oklahoma to central/southern MS, and will be streaming live video of this chase at http://TornadoVideos.net/Live, and Tweeting throughout the chase (@reedtimmertvn). Stay tuned for updates.

Tornadoes 9 April 2011

Tornado hits Mapleton, IA!

Reports are still coming in, but an apparently large, destructive tornado has hit the town of Mapleton, Iowa this evening. Several storm chasers were streaming this tornado live, and debris could be seen flying through the air. Dick McGowan reports that major structural damage has occurred. Above are radar images taken as the storm moved over town — velocity was maxing out at 161 kts of shear at the time, so this was very likely a strong to violent tornado. This extremely dangerous storm could still be producing a tornado as it moves east of Mapleton at 25 MPH. A tornado watch remains in effect until 1:00 AM for portions of eastern NE and the northwestern half of Iowa, and residents in these areas should keep their weather radio nearby and monitor the NWS and local media for warnings! – Tomorrow looks like a potential high risk for eastern IA, northern IL and much of Wisconsin!

A warm front lifting north out of Louisiana into southern Arkansas has brought mid to upper 60s dewpoints to parts of north Texas (east of the Dallas/Fort Worth metro), Louisiana and western Mississippi. The dryline currently situated just east of the DFW area has sparked a number of powerful, semi-discrete storms, and has prompted tornado warnings near Paris, Texas. UPDATE: storm chasers have also reported a damaging tornado in Clarksville, TX! Further east, tornado warnings have also been issued in east-central Louisiana this afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a heightened risk for strong tornadoes later this afternoon and into the evening across central Louisiana and western Mississippi, in anticipation of the arrival of increased wind shear entering this already unstable region. The high-precipitation nature of these storms adds another element of danger to what could turn into a mostly after-dark event, so those in the risk areas should remain especially alert, monitor local media and NWS statements and have a plan of action in case a warning is issued. A number of storm chasers are in the field for this event, so be sure to check the LIVE page for a look at things in real-time
