Goderich tornado rated an F-3, Storm Photo of the Week ( August 15 – 22)

The Goderich, Ontario tornado was given an F-3 rating by Environment Canada and, unfortunately, killed one person–along with 37 other injuries. The Ontario government has announced that it will give "Canada's prettiest town" 5 million dollars to assist with the clean-up and rebuilding. Check out the AMAZING video someone shot, as well as other information, here.

TVN's "Storm Photo of the Week" comes from Tony Perkins, who was flying over Sioux Falls, SD on August 6th. Above, you'll notice the Northern Lights as well as lightning in the same photo, which is a truly unique experience! Congrats Tony! And congratulations on your recent engagement! If you wish to send your photos and have them considered for the "Storm Photo of the Week" — send them to TVNphotos (AT) gmail (Dot) com.

Hurricane Irene, could be a threat to portions of the East Coast in the next few days and TVN is preparing to chase this hurricane, with an early departure tomorrow morning. Stay tuned, later tonight, for more on Hurricane Irene and TVN's plans to intercept her.

Tornadoes Storm Photo of the Week (July 31- August 6), Northern Lights and Chasing Potential!

Storm Photo of the Week (July 31- August 6), Northern Lights and Chasing Potential!

We are starting a new thing here at TornadoVideos.Net, publishing user submitted photos once a week. They can be any kind of weather, from anywhere in the world! This includes any kind of weather phenomena (tornadoes, storm clouds, lightning, etc) or even things such as atmospheric optics (Sun halos, northern lights, etc). It is very important to understand that TVN will NOT sell your photos, we will simply share them on our website, Facebook pages, and Twitter. If this interests you and you'd like your photos displayed through these outlets, simply send them to TVNphotos@gmail.com with a description in the Subject Line….then the date and the phenomena.

Our first winner of the "Storm Photo of the Week" goes to Kristi Howard! (Photo Above) She sends this photo from Sapulpa, OK on May 22nd, 2011 looking northeast at the "Joplin Supercell" as it was forming and before the EF-5 tornado struck the city of Joplin, Missouri. Those who wish to help those still recovering from the deadly Joplin tornado, may do so by donating to the Red Cross or the Joplin Missouri Disaster Relief Fund.
Northern Lights are possible tonight for any High-Latitude watchers with cloud-free skies. To best view northern lights, head away from city lights, and look to the north and northeast of your location. NOAA space weather forecasters give tonight a 35% chance of mid-latitude watchers and 40% chance for high-latitude watchers. This stems from a solar flare that erupted earlier this week, so get out tonight and see if you can see them on the northern horizon!

Finally, a small chance for tornadoes tomorrow exists in portions of Central MN, Eastern ND and SD. Depending on tonight's MCS, there could be a few tornadoes in this area and I will be heading up north from KC after I type this post to position myself for tomorrow and the northern lights tonight. TVN streamers will be out in full-force tomorrow, so be sure to check out the Live Chasing page here and follow Reed's Facebook fan page and Twitter account for live updates!

Tornadoes Tornado in Slovenia! Tropical Storm Don to help with Texas Drought?

Tornado in Slovenia! Tropical Storm Don to help with Texas Drought?

Extreme Storm Chaser Marko Korosec captured this "landspout" (or non mesocyclonic tornado) near Kozina, Slovenia on July 26th. Soundings showed high LCLs, weak deep-layer shear and relatively zero storm-relative helicity on this day, suggesting this tornado was not derived from a supercell. He said it lasted about 6 minutes and strong upward motion and rotationwas observed just above the ground! Tornadoes in Slovenia are extremely rare, and Marko says that this is the first footage of a tornado in Slovenia that he is aware of! Check out more of his amazing photos here!

Meanwhile, the first tropical storm in the Gulf this year, could provide some much-needed rain to the drought-stricken state this weekend as it should only make landfall as a tropical storm. Nevertheless, farmers will take any type of rain they can get; with most of the state in serious drought conditions. From the period of October of 2010 to June 2011, this has been the highest drought period recorded since 1895 for the state of Texas. Hopefully, this TS can bring some much needed relief to some of the state! Below is a map of the projected path of TS Don given by the NHC.

Reports from last night's storms in eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois show that nearly 15 inches of rain fell, with Galena, Illinois recording the most with 13.45! Extreme Droughts to the south, and excessive flooding to the north (along the Missouri River) continue to plague communities across the central part of the country.

Strong Tornadoes Possible This Evening in SD/ND, TVN's North Dakota Chase Last Friday!

Strong tornadoes are possible today in the Central Dakotas once again, as a decent shortwave ejects over extreme instability. Below, is a RUC model map of the forecasted EHIs at 0z (7 pm CDT) and 1 hour forecasted precipitation model. As you can see, the RUC fires a storm in very close proximity to the forecasted EHI's (a parameter used to predict tornadoes) along the ND/SD border by 7 pm. Extremely large hail is also a possibility with any storms that can initiate. Stay tuned for live video streams here; several chasers are chasing this moderate risk setup!

TVN chased in Western and Central North Dakota on Friday, with a mission to collect more radar data. The storm pictured, above, initiated along a warm front just W/SW of Bismarck, North Dakota and moved NW much of its life. It could never fully root on the warm front and likely encountered subsidence in between two waves, one in eastern SD/ND and one in E. Montana/ W. ND and the entire storm died fairly quickly after producing a couple of funnels. We then went west, where we collected data on other tornado-warned supercells, which seemed to be just behind a massive cold pool along the MT/ND borders. All-in-all, it was a great chase, with textbook structure on the first supercell we intercepted and more radar data collected!
