A tornado was reported, filmed and photographed near Dubbo on 25 August 2015 as a vigorous upper trough met milder air over the moist air sitting across eastern NSW. The video is worth finding. You can hear debris clashing in mid air and a constant hissing underneath it, and the tornado stayed on the ground for more than five minutes, at times showing strong upward motion and what looked like vapour vortex behaviour inside it. The same outbreak carried large to giant hailstones — photographs of stones from Murrurundi came in through Hunter Weather, alongside the Dubbo tornado pictures. Tornadoes are not unknown in New South Wales, but a well filmed one lasting that long over open country is the kind of event storm watchers talk about for years. When the air is that volatile, hail and a tornado can turn up in the same afternoon, and the trick for anyone out in it is keeping a good distance and letting it pass.
