Kane Hardie was working on Range Road just north of Corindi on 17 September 2015, keeping an eye on severe storms on radar and mentioning to his boss that hail looked likely. Then it was too late to leave. Small hail started as he walked back to the car, but the sound was wrong — there was a definite hail roar building. Golf ball stones were landing by the time he reached the car, and while he was recording on his phone his back window exploded behind him. The big ones were in the 9 cm plus range, though they fell scattered among smaller stones. The region around Corindi and Red Rock took millions of dollars in crop damage on top of the damage to vehicles and houses. There is footage of giant hail smashing a window at ground zero, and it is not comfortable viewing if you have ever parked under a storm. Hail that size does not need to be thick on the ground to do serious work.
